AREA I. Intelligent Instrumentation
Project 19:
Intelligent Instrumentation
Description:
An instrumentation system based on the information on aromas, delivered
by an electronic nose capable of identifying the denomination of origin
of Chilean wines with a reliability of at least 90% shall be set up. The
system will also be capable of rapidly detecting sensorial problems in
wines, such as brettanomyces, TCA, and others. This will supplement the
progress already made in a previous project, in which the electronic nose
managed to differentiate among variables. Therefore, there are results
for the Cabernet Sauvignon variety from the valleys of Colchagua, Maule,
Maipo and Rapel.
Outcomes:
Objective and scientific method for DO certification, with at least 90%
effectiveness.
Researcher’s observation:
The procedure is carried out practically “in line” given that
once the aroma measurement has been made, which takes about 45 seconds,
the results are obtained a couple of minutes afterwards. The instrumentation
system processes the aromatic signals, extracts their characteristics
and classifies them according to the information contained in the data
base, using advance mathematical tools. The key element for the success
of this system is having the largest possible data base.
