AREA II. Clones
Project 21:
Clones
Description:
This research project will evaluate the vegetative-productive behavior
of clones of various varieties in different wine producing areas of Chile.
It will also assess the potential quality of the wines that may be produced
from such clones, in order to define which are more suitable for certain
places and to recommend agronomical management. Data support will be created
to provide access to this information.
Clone samples of different varieties will be planted to evaluate their
behavior in six wine producing valleys (Limarí, Casablanca, Maipo,
Colchagua, Maule and Bío Bío) in half a hectare of each
valley (in the land which gathers the average characteristics of each
valley).
The first year of the project involves the preparation and homogenization
of the land. The project is currently undergoing the agrological description
phase of the soil to subsequently proceed to planting.
Outcomes:
The agronomic and enological profile of each cultivar/clone, for different
agro-climatic conditions.
Researcher’s comment:
Increasing the diversity of the cultivars and clones of national viticulture
is an industry need in Chile. This project will provide viticultural/
enological information on the behavior of varieties and clones which are
scarcely disseminated in national viticulture, under very different edafoclimatic
conditions.
